Your first language is where you feel things

You can speak good English and still find that therapy in it works differently. The words you have for grief, for shame, for being afraid were learned young and in Spanish, and they carry a weight the English version does not. People often say the English sentence is correct but does not quite sound like them.

There is also the effort. Following a session in your second language takes attention you would rather spend on the session itself. If you think more clearly in Spanish, we work in Spanish. If some weeks English fits better, we use English. The point is not the language on the door, it is that you get to use the one you feel in.

Registered here, trained in both places

I am a Counselling Psychologist registered with the HCPC, the UK regulator, and I hold a doctorate in psychology. I am also chartered with the British Psychological Society and registered with the Colegio Oficial de la Psicología de Madrid. Spanish is my first language.

That combination is worth more than it sounds. Plenty of therapists in London speak Spanish. Fewer are regulated as psychologists in the UK, which is what lets you check my registration on a public register, ask me for a report, and know which standards I answer to.

What people usually bring

  • Being far from family, and the guilt that comes with that
  • A workplace culture that reads as cold, or feedback you cannot place
  • A relationship where each of you argues in a different language
  • Not feeling Spanish enough anymore, and not British either
  • Anxiety or low mood that arrived with the move and stayed
  • Something older that living abroad brought back up

How I work

Brief, focused therapy. We agree what you want to be different, we work towards it, and we stop when it is done. Some people need a single session. Others need a course of ten. I will tell you which I think it is rather than let it drift.

The approaches I use are cognitive behavioural therapy, EMDR for trauma, and solution-focused and brief strategic work. I choose between them for your situation instead of applying the same one to everybody.

Where, and how much

In person in Queen's Park, north west London, and at The Minster Centre. Online anywhere in the UK, which is what most people choose.

Sessions are £80 for 50 minutes. Specialist trauma work is £150. The first 15 minutes are a free call, so you can hear how I work before you decide anything.

Questions people ask first

Do the sessions have to be in Spanish?

No. We can work in Spanish, in English, or move between the two. Some people start in English and switch when the harder material arrives, which is usually a sign we are getting somewhere.

Are you actually registered in the UK?

Yes. I am on the HCPC register as a Counselling Psychologist, registration PYL040507, and you can check it yourself on the HCPC website. I am also chartered with the British Psychological Society.

Should I try the NHS first?

For some people that is the right route, and I will say so if I think it is. Waiting times for talking therapies vary a lot between boroughs, and provision in Spanish is limited. Bring it up on the free call and I will be straight with you about whether private makes sense in your case.

What happens if I move back to Spain?

We can carry on online. I am registered in both countries, so a move does not mean starting again with someone new.
